History & Economy
Economy
Aruba
is a free market; tourism remains today the basis of a larger share of national income. By the rapid growth of tourism in the last 80 years, related industries like construction have also flourished. Other major industries include oil refining and storage, as well as the activities of offshore banking. Despite the island's poor soil and low rainfall which limits their agricultural potential, there are crops of aloe, and activities such as livestock and fisheries contributing to the economy of Aruba. The country also exported art and collectibles, machinery, electrical equipment and transport equipment.
History
Aruba belonged to the Dutch Antilles and Holland granted self-government from January 1, 1986 and became independent in 1996. It was inhabited by Indians Caquetios of the Arawak tribe.

Aruba was discovered in 1499 by Spanish conquistador Alonso de Ojeda. In 1636, in the war between Spain and the Netherlands, the Dutch kept the island.

In 1929 the Standard Oil Company one of the largest oil refinerie s
built in Aruba imported oil from Venezuela.
