Political System
The Venezuelan Republic of Venezuela is formed by a democratic and federal Republic. A representative democracy with five divisions of powers: the Executive Branch, headed by the President, assisted by Cabinet of Ministers; the Legislative Branch, formed by the chamber of Deputies, elected every five years; the Judicial Branch, formed by various branches under a Supreme Tribunal of Justice; and the Moral and the Electoral Branches.

23 States, 1 Capital District and 72 Islands called Federal Dependencies. The capital is Caracas with 6 million inhabitants approximately.
Religion
96% of the people are Roman Catholic. There is separation of the Church and the State, with complete freedom of worship. Many major creeds are represented.
Language
The official language is Spanish. English is the second most important language, especially in business. More than 30 different American Indian languages coexist in the Guyana region: Amazonas, Delta Amacuro and Bolívar States.
Economy - Major Products/Industries
Petroleum, mining (iron, bauxite, aluminum, steel, nickel, copper, diamond, gold, silver and so on), coffee, cocoa, corn and other cereals, fruits and sugar.
Currency
The unit of currency is the Bolívar Fuerte, abbreviated to Bs. There are coins 0,01; 0,10; 0,125; 0,25; 0,50; 1 Bolívar Fuerte and paper money 2; 5; 10; 20; 50; 100 Bolívares Fuertes.
Early in 2003, restrictions on importing currency were introduced, and the exchange rate of the local currency against the US dollar was fixed in US$ 1 = 4, 30 BsF.
Avoid the black market exchange basically in the airport; many swindlers are waiting for you, so it is better and safer to do it in authorized money-exchange offices. Please ask our Alborada guide.
Visa and Documents
Nationals from the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Japan, the UK and most Western and Scandinavian European countries don't need a visa if they fly into Venezuela. Tourist Cards are valid for 60 days and can be extended. Tourist Cards are given free of charge while on board the airlines they fly with. Every tourist entering Venezuela should have an onward ticket. Ideally, all travelers should have a travel insurance policy.
Upon arrival to Venezuela, your passport and tourist card will be stamped (make sure this happens) by SAIME (the name derives from the Spanish acronym for Servicio Administrativo de Identificación Migración y Extranjería, Administrative Service of Migration and Foreign Affairs)... You will be asked to show an onward ticket.
Visa and tourist card extensions are handled by the SAIME office in Caracas.
